Herpetofauna: One Life's List

Hyla avivoca
Bird-Voiced Treefrog

Union Co., Illinois
May 1996

The frog chorus sounds out in La Rue Scatters, any night in May or June.  Green Treefrogs dominate with their overlapping rounds of queenk queenk. Underneath the banjo plucks of Green Frogs, the Bullfrog's throaty bellow, Grey Treefrogs chatter up in the willows and tupelos, and somewhere out there in the dark, ten feet or a hundred yards away, a lone Bird-Voiced calls.  seep-seep-seep.

A creature of wooded swamps, avivoca is now protected in Illinois, where it occurs in a few of the southern counties where its habitat is preserved.
