Herpetofauna: One Life's List

Gastrophryne olivacea
Great Plains Narrowmouth Toad

Val Verde Co., Texas
May 23, 1997

We heard large numbers of these plain little frogs calling in the raodside ditches of west Texas - their call is like a high-pitched sheep bleating.  We managed to find one on the road but missed an opportunity for a picture.

Here is a specimen from Kansas exhibiting the 'unken reflex' where the body is held rigidly in an unnaturally curved position.
