Eastern Mud Turtle
Kinosternon subrubrum subrubrum

Okefenokee Swamp, Georgia.  March 1978

We were using a dip net to catch sirens in a roadside ditch near the Okefenokee one night, and managed to catch several Eastern Mud Turtles in the process.  It wasn't until twenty years later that I was able to take a picture of one, found crossing a road in Jasper Co., South Carolina.  We had several road encounters with Eastern Muds - apparently they wander away from water a bit more than most Mud or Musk Turtles.  They don't smell quite as bad as Stinkpots do, but then again not much does!
